Mastitis

Mastitis encompasses a spectrum of conditions that result from inflammation and edema (trapped fluid) of the breast(s) and most commonly occurs in the first six weeks postpartum. If breast congestion progresses, inflammatory mastitis can develop and bacterial mastitis may follow. This means that inflammatory mastitis can be resolved without the use of antibiotics when gentle hands-on techniques and simple at home care strategies are quickly implemented. If antibiotics are needed, supportive strategies can still be added to the regimen to ensure the overall health of you and your baby are encouraged and that full healing happens as quickly as possible. During a consultation, we will discuss the interventions supported by evidence that will resolve mastitis in a timely fashion and identify underlying issues that may have contributed to its development.
